What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?

Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) in Nevada and elsewhere are a type of outpatient treatment for substance use disorders. With an IOP, patients attend treatment sessions at a care facility but then return to their own homes at night. IOPs provide a higher level of care than traditional outpatient treatment, but they’re a step down from inpatient programs where patients stay in a rehab facility 24/7.1,2 That said, IOPs provide similar care and therapies to those found in inpatient settings, just at a lower intensity.

Intensive outpatient programs can help people transition out of inpatient treatment and into their new normal. Or, IOPs can be the start of a patient’s recovery journey, perhaps following a short detox period.

Provided in clinics, rehab facilities, counseling offices, and more, IOPs in Nevada usually:1

  • Last for 90 days.
  • Require patients to attend 6 to 30 hours a week.
  • Are followed by traditional outpatient continuing care.

Since there’s no one-size-fits all solution to treatment, it’s important to work with addiction and healthcare professionals to determine which level of treatment is right for you or your loved one. However, professionals typically recommend intensive outpatient programs for people with mild to moderate addiction who don’t need 24/7 care.4

While not required, positive at-home support systems can be helpful for IOP patients.5 In an inpatient program, patients receive care and attention 24/7, and they’re surrounded by counselors, medical professionals, and peers. If patients’ home environments lack the support of family and friends, this environment can sometimes hinder progress and undermine success in an outpatient program. Additionally, outpatient care is best suited to those with transportation to attend sessions, living arrangements that support sober living, and the motivation to attend consistently.6

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA), treatment for substance use disorders is at least partly covered by insurance.10,11 In effect, these regulations stipulate that insurance providers must offer equal coverage for mental and physical health conditions.

Medicare, Medicaid, and Tricare (a health program for uniformed service members, retirees, and their families) also offer full or partial coverage for treatment such as IOPs.  To provide some context, the following number of IOPs in Nevada accept these respective insurance types:7
