About Georgia

Georgia occupies an area of about 70 000 sq km (population 5,5 million) and is thus twice the size of Belgium and nearly twice as large as Switzerland. It covers the central and western parts of Transcaucasia with its westernmost border on the Black Sea. The northern section of the country contains the greater Caucasus system of mountain ranges and is situated at the boundary of two climatic zones - moderate and subtropical.

Georgia is the legendary home of Jason and Golden Fleece and the historic crossroads of Gengis Khan, the Caliphs of Baghdad and the Russians and Northern tribes. Founded more than 3,000 years ago, Georgia's historic is reflected in the architecture, jewelry and artifacs to be found throughout the cities and countrysides.

Georgia's total borders encompass 1,900 kilometers of which more than 300 kilometers are sea border. Within the various regions, especially in Kakheti, there are 400 varieties of grapes cultivated, making Georgia a major wine producing country. It also has about 1,000 mineral springs, the most notable of which is Borjomi, that produces a special brand of mineral water used throughout Eastern Europe.
