The issue develops due to a complex interplay between genetics, environment, and opportunity, and sometimes, it develops so slowly that the progression is difficult to see.

One quick drink with coworkers turns into three or four drinks before bed. A sip with dinner becomes a sip with lunch. And then it morphs into the need to sip alcohol at breakfast. Sometimes, people feel as though they need to drink all the time, or else they feel physically ill with cravings.

Every person with alcoholism has a personal story to share. No two people with alcoholism are exactly alike. In fact, in a study in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, researchers suggest that there are four different subtypes of alcoholism.1 They vary depending on when they appear, how serious the symptoms are, and how they should be treated.

While alcoholism types, and people who have alcoholism, can be very different, there is one thing that remains the same: People who have alcoholism will need treatment in order to recover. Since these people have different disease paths, they will need different types of treatment programs, and these treatments come with varying price tags.

There are several different types of alcohol rehabilitation programs that are available to individuals seeking help to overcome addiction to alcohol. The pros and cons of each alcohol rehab center should be thoroughly evaluated, and the program that best meets the needs of the individual and their specific condition should be selected.

Individuals also suffering from mental illness should look for alcohol rehab centers that offer dual diagnosis treatment. These specialized programs will treat alcohol addiction while also addressing any <a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/co-occurring-disorders" target="_blank" rel="noopener">co-occurring mental conditions</a>.

The most intense forms of treatment are offered through residential programs, which provide around-the-clock care but require moving into the alcohol rehab center and staying for the duration of treatment (typically 30-90 days).

These people may need a conversation about addiction and its consequences before they will agree to get treatment. That conversation is known as an intervention.

Some families hold this talk informally, sitting down as a group without preparation or outside support. But some families hire outside help, so they can both understand what alcoholism is and how to persuade the person to get care. These families may incur costs as they plan.

A flat fee for an intervention may be between $2,500 and $10,000. How Much Does Alcohol Rehab Cost?

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that 67% of all drug overdoses between January 2021 and January 2022 involved fentanyl.1 It’s no wonder that fentanyl is such a prominent contributor to overdoses; ingesting only 2 milligrams of this substance can cause death.1[/content-overview]

Fentanyl carries many potential adverse side effects that can be harmful to a person’s health when consumed alone or in combination with other drugs.

Because of fentanyl’s profound level of potency and growing prominence in society, it’s critical to understand where fentanyl comes from, its risks and adverse effects, and its role in overdoses in the United States. Through gaining more context about fentanyl, you can help keep yourself and your loved ones safe from this substance and its negative implications.
<h2>What is Fentanyl?</h2>
Fentanyl is a fully synthetic opioid 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine.2 Prescription fentanyl may be prescribed to treat relatively severe pain. In its various formulations, prescription fentanyl may be administered as an injectable solution, transdermal patch, or lozenge.2

Synthetic opioids, including fentanyl, are the most cited types of drugs involved in overdose deaths in the United States.2 Though cases of non-medical misuse of pharmaceutical fentanyl exist, much of the opioid overdose crisis in recent years has involved illicitly manufactured fentanyl. Such illicit forms of this drug are sometimes sold in powder form or pressed into pills that often resemble other prescription medications.2

People who purchase illicit drugs, such as heroin, meth, or cocaine, may accidentally purchase a substance laced with fentanyl without knowing it. For someone who has no tolerance to opioids whatsoever, this could be especially dangerous. Some drug dealers also advertise and sell fentanyl under the guise of extremely strong heroin, posing profound danger to unknowing purchasers.3

<h2>Fentanyl Adverse Effects</h2>
Adverse effects of fentanyl can put those who consume this substance in very real danger and can potentially occur very soon after only one instance of fentanyl use.2 Effects of fentanyl can include (but are not limited to) the following symptoms:2

 	<li>Drowsiness and nausea.</li>
 	<li>Confusion.</li>
 	<li>Constipation.</li>
 	<li>Respiratory distress.</li>
 	<li>Muscle rigidity.</li>
 	<li>Unconsciousness or sedation.</li>
 	<li>Seizures.</li>

Anyone who uses fentanyl is subject to experiencing a range of adverse (and potentially deadly) effects. Fentanyl use of any kind is potentially even more risky for people who suffer from obstructive airway diseases (such as asthma), suffer from liver failure, are hypersensitive to or allergic to certain fillers in fentanyl, or whose tolerance to opioids is low.3

Opioids like fentanyl can lead to dangerously slowed breathing.4 If left untreated, respiratory depression can progress to full respiratory arrest, or the complete shut-down of respiratory function. As such, fentanyl misuse can increase the risk of hypoxia (impaired delivery of oxygen to vital tissues), hypoxic brain injury, and even death.4 

Polysubstance use can pose additional risks to people who consume fentanyl. The presence of other drugs, such as alcohol and opioids, can exacerbate fentanyl’s potential negative effects and create complex and dangerous medical scenarios.3

As is the case with all opioids, one major potential adverse effect of fentanyl misuse is that it increases the likelihood of someone developing a substance use disorder (SUD), or addiction to fentanyl.5 Such a substance use disorder, or an opioid use disorder involving fentanyl, is characterized by someone’s inability to stop using fentanyl, despite negative life consequences—such as those related to work, school, and social/personal affairs.3

In some cases, fentanyl may be mixed in with drugs that someone uses a needle to inject. Drug use by needle injection may be associated with dangers aside from the adverse pharmacological effects of the drug itself.6 For example, If someone injects fentanyl or another drug mixed with fentanyl with a nonsterile needle, their risk of contracting HIV may increase substantially.6 People that inject fentanyl through nonsterile needles also risk the potential of developing endocarditis (infection of the heart valves), tetanus, abscesses, and more.
<h2>Fentanyl Overdose</h2>
If you believe that you or someone you love is overdosing on fentanyl or another drug, this is a medical emergency. Call 911 immediately or visit your nearest emergency medical center.

Overdose is perhaps the most dangerous and potentially impactful potential adverse effect of fentanyl consumption. Fentanyl’s high level of potency greatly increases its risk for overdose and other adverse reactions.3

Synthetic opioids, which include fentanyl, are often involved in overdose deaths.2 Fentanyl’s role in overdoses today is partially due to many illegal drug distributors intentionally mixing fentanyl with other substances, like methamphetamine, heroin, and cocaine, to drive down their costs of production (and therefore increase their profits).2 For people who have built no tolerance to opioids – and even for those who have – consuming fentanyl unknowingly with other drugs can be extremely dangerous.3

It’s often easier and more cost-effective for drug dealers to mass-produce illicit opioids by “cutting” their products with a small amount of fentanyl.2 Therefore, people who purchase these drugs may end up consuming fentanyl without knowing it, which can result in someone taking too much fentanyl and overdosing.

Unfortunately, it can be practically impossible to distinguish with the naked eye whether illicitly-manufactured drugs, such as heroin, MDMA, cocaine, and methamphetamine, contain trace amounts of fentanyl.6 For example, a legally manufactured oxycodone pill and a counterfeit one laced with fentanyl may be practically indistinguishable. Both might be round and blue and may contain the same markings.6 It can reportedly take just two milligrams ) to fatally overdose on fentanyl.6

However, there are three symptoms often recognized as the classic “opioid overdose triad” when it comes to toxic doses of opioids, including fentanyl. These include:7

 	<li>Respiratory depression (slow, ineffective breathing).</li>
 	<li>Loss or decreased level of consciousness.</li>

<h3>Is Fentanyl Overdose Reversible?</h3>
Yes, fentanyl overdose is reversible with a drug called naloxone and prompt medical attention. Reversal of <a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/fentanyl-treatment/symptoms-associated-with-a-fentanyl-overdose">fentanyl overdose</a> is possible if appropriate action is taken in a timely manner.8 Contact 911 immediately once overdose symptoms present themselves.8 Good Samaritan laws will protect you from criminal action if you report an overdose.8 So, don’t let the fear of criminal action prevent you from saving someone’s life.[/callout-borders]

<a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/addiction-medications/naloxone">Naloxone</a> is a life-saving drug that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose.9 Naloxone is an opioid antagonist, meaning it binds to the opioid receptors in the body and blocks the effects of any circulating opioid agonist drug.9 It is only effective in countering the effects of opioids and may not work to fully reverse overdoses involving other substances.9

Multiple rounds of naloxone may be needed to reverse an overdose on fentanyl, because fentanyl is such a strong opioid.9 Fentanyl’s potency should be taken into consideration when administering naloxone.9 There are ongoing efforts to formulating a stronger formulation of naloxone to counter the effects of extremely potent opioids, including fentanyl.9

Naloxone can be given as a spray or injection.9 The effectiveness of this substance is so profound that overdose kits containing the substance are being given to police officers, non-medical first responders, and even family or friends of a person that has a history of opioid use.9 Community based programs or local health departments can also provide training on proper naloxone use and may even provide the substance free of charge to the public, depending on a state’s laws.9

Again, please be sure to call emergency services as soon as possible if it’s believed that someone is overdosing on opioids.9 Medical professionals may need as much time as possible to administer naloxone if more than one dose is needed.9

<h2>Fentanyl Addiction and Treatment</h2>
Though the adverse effects of fentanyl, including overdose, may be experienced with even a single instance of use, they could also be part of a larger opioid addiction or other substance use disorder. People with significant opioid dependence often benefit from medically supervised detox to manage their withdrawal symptoms, followed by further rehabilitation to address many of the more psychosocial aspects of their addiction.10

Treatment for opioid dependence and opioid use disorders may consist of:
<ul>
 	<li><a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/drug-detox">Medically managed withdrawal</a>: This is usually the first step in treatment. In this type of treatment, the patient is monitored by a medical team to ensure that their withdrawal from fentanyl is managed safely and effectively.10</li>
 	<li><a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/rehab-guide/inpatient">Inpatient rehab</a>: The person receives treatment on an inpatient basis where they will receive 24-hour care during their stay. This option is ideal for people with relatively severe addictions and addiction-related issues, as well as for people struggling with co-occurring disorders.12</li>
 	<li><a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/rehab-guide/outpatient-treatment">Outpatient treatment</a>: The person receives treatment on an outpatient basis and is able to return home or other residence outside of treatment hours. Outpatient treatment often involves behavioral therapeutic sessions several hours a day throughout the week.10</li>
 	<li>Mental health counseling: Behavioral therapies can assist with altering maladaptive behaviors and formulating relapse prevention plans.10</li>

<h2>Symptoms of Kidney Stones</h2>
Kidney stones are hard clumps of waste made up of chemicals in the urine. Stones are most commonly made of calcium oxalate and the concentration of these salts increases when the body is dehydrated. Symptoms of kidney stones usually involve severe pain and may include:1
<ul>
 	<li>severe lower back pain</li>
 	<li>nausea</li>
 	<li>vomiting</li>
 	<li>blood in the urine</li>
 	<li>fever</li>
 	<li>chills</li>
 	<li>and more.</li>
</ul>

Kidney stones can form for several reasons. This page will inform you about kidney stones, their relation to alcohol use, how to treat kidney stones, and how to find treatment for an alcohol use disorder.
<h2>Can Alcohol Cause Kidney Stones?</h2>
There is not significant evidence that alcohol directly causes kidney stones. <a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/alcoholism-treatment">Alcohol use</a> – particularly excessive alcohol use in which a woman drinks four or more alcoholic drinks in a single occasion or a man drinks five or more drinks during a single session– is, however, linked to the development of a variety of other health problems. Some of these health issues include kidney damage, kidney failure, high blood pressure, various cancers, weakened immune system, mental health problems, social problems, and alcohol use disorders (AUDs).2,3 Some of these issues directly or indirectly negatively impact the <a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/health-complications-addiction/renal-system" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">renal system</a>.

Concentrated urine can occur when the body is dehydrated—a leading cause of kidney stones.3 Dehydration can occur when people do not drink enough water to help the kidneys remove waste from the blood.3 And though we know alcohol consumption whether it be beer, wines, or spirits can contribute to dehydration, we can not link kidney stone development directly to alcohol use and abuse.
<h3>Other Kidney Stone Causes &amp; Risk Factors</h3>
Other causes and risk factors of kidney stones include:
<ul class="ul1">
 	<li class="li1">Past kidney stones.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Dehydration.</li>
 	<li class="li1">High-protein diets.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Being overweight or obese.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Having had a gastric bypass.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Polycystic kidney disease.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Conditions that causes your urine to contain high levels of cystine, oxalate, uric acid or calcium.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Conditions that cause swelling or irritation in your bowel or your joints.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Certain medicines, such as diuretics or calcium-based antacids.</li>
</ul>

<h2>Can Alcohol Help Kidney Stones?</h2>
Alcohol does not help one pass a kidney stone. In some studies, alcohol has been proven to, in light-to-moderate amounts, benefit some aspects of health. However, evidence does not suggest that alcohol can help someone prevent, nor pass, a kidney stone.
<h2>Do Certain Drinks, Foods, or Medication Cause Kidney Stones?</h2>
Experts have found that certain drinks, foods, and medication may increase one’s risk of developing a kidney stone:4
<ul>
 	<li>Animal proteins (e.g., beef, pork, chicken).</li>
 	<li>Oxalate-rich foods (e.g., spinach, okra, beets, rhubarb, Swiss chard, sweet potatoes, nuts, tea, chocolate, black pepper, and soy products).</li>
 	<li>Sodium (salty foods).</li>
 	<li>Diuretic drinks (e.g., alcohol, wine, beer, spirits, caffeine, tea).</li>
 	<li>Medication (e.g., Lasix, calcium antacids, calcium supplements).</li>
</ul>
It’s important to talk with your doctor about all your health concerns including proper diet, exercise, and alcohol consumption. Brief health screenings by your provider can help determine if you are at increased risk for developing these types of health problems.

<h2>Kidney Stone Treatments</h2>
Small kidney stones will usually pass with time and treatment may include drinking more water and prescribed pain relievers. For larger stones, there are a variety of surgical treatments in order to break up or remove the stones.


<h2>Can You Die From Kidney Stones?</h2>
If left untreated, kidney stones can cause major health complications including hypertension and a reduced filtration rate (glomerular filtration rate), the process of removing enough wastes and fluids from the body to keep you healthy.5 (p4)Kidney failure, although rare,6,7 is a complication of reduced filtration rate that can be life-threatening over time.5 Experts highly recommend prevention efforts to reduce or stop the formation of stones by treating other health conditions that cause the forming of stones such as high blood pressure.6
<h2>What Other Kidney Issues are Associated with Alcohol/Drinking?</h2>
Kidneys are vital to the overall healthy functioning of the human body and serve as filtration devices for any harmful or toxic substance that enters your bloodstream. When someone drinks in excess, the kidneys have to work harder to filter the body’s blood and can cause immense stress on the kidneys. The dehydrating effect of alcohol can negatively impact your body’s cell and organ functions. Additionally, <a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/alcoholism-treatment/how-long-in-system" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">alcohol in the body</a> can impact the hormones that contribute to healthy kidney function in your body.3

Regular heavy drinking has been known to double the risk of developing chronic kidney disease. Those who smoke cigarettes in addition to drinking heavily are about five times more likely to develop kidney disease than those who only drink excessively.3

<h2>Health Issues Associated with Drinking Outside of Renal System</h2>
Even a small amount of alcohol can impact your health in a negative way and is associated with an increased risk for death and other health problems. Short-term risks of excessive alcohol use include injuries, such as motor vehicle crash injuries, <a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/alcoholism-treatment/overdose">alcohol poisoning</a>, risky sexual behaviors, miscarriage, and stillbirth.2

In the long-term, drinking can cause high blood pressure, heart disease, liver disease, digestive issues, cancer (breast cancer, mouth cancer, throat cancer, esophageal cancer, and more), weakening immune system, learning and memory issues, mental health problems, social problems, and alcohol use disorders (AUDs).2

Can Alcohol Cause Kidney Stones?

[content-overview]Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is an intestinal disorder that does not appear to present with actual physical damage to the intestines but nonetheless results in discomfort, pain in the abdominal area, frequent episodes of diarrhea or constipation, and numerous functional issues regarding the types of foods that individuals can eat or activities they can engage in.[/content-overview]
<h2>IBS Statistics &amp; Prevalence</h2>
The disorder appears to wax and wane in some individuals, and when it is at its peak, it is often associated with significant functional impairment. The estimates of the prevalence of IBS range from 7 percent to 21 percent worldwide.

According to a 2014 study in the journal Clinical Epidemiology, IBS occurs more often in women than in men (at estimated rates of 1.5-3 females per male) and across all age groups.1 It occurs more often in industrialized countries and twice as often in people with a family history of the disorder.

<h2>Causes of IBS</h2>
There is currently no definitive known cause for IBS, but there are numerous factors that may be associated with its development.2
<ul>
 	<li>Individuals may have a large intestine that has increased sensitivity to specific types of food.</li>
 	<li>Stress is often associated with the development of IBS. Numerous sources still consider IBS to be a manifestation of a psychological disorder.</li>
 	<li>Some research suggests that a bacterial infection may be associated with the development of IBS.</li>
 	<li>Celiac disease occurs when the lining of the small intestine has been damaged, leading to difficulty digesting and absorbing certain types of foods. This has been hypothesized as a potential cause of IBS.</li>
 	<li>Individuals with unusually high levels of serotonin in the gastrointestinal system may experience increased sensitivity and difficulty with the movement of food through the intestine.</li>
 	<li>Overuse of antibiotics may result in the death of good bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract that would normally aid in digestion.</li>
 	<li>IBS may be the result of food allergies.</li>
</ul>

<h2>Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome</h2>
Interestingly, even though IBS is often diagnosed according to specific criteria, there appears to be no formal agreement on the definition of what IBS actually is and what the core symptoms of the disorder are. The symptom profile includes a number of very vague and subjective symptoms that cannot be objectively identified, such as:
<ul>
 	<li>Pain in the abdomen.</li>
 	<li>Abdominal bloating.</li>
 	<li>Cramps, particularly with bowel movements.</li>
 	<li>Urgency.</li>
 	<li>Excessive strain when passing a stool.</li>
 	<li>Repeated belching.</li>
 	<li>Diarrhea or constipation.</li>
 	<li>Fatigue.</li>
 	<li>Lethargy and tiredness.</li>
 	<li>Psychological symptoms that can include depression, a lack of motivation, apathy, etc.</li>
</ul>
The imaging results of most IBS patients often do not reveal any significant pathology. The symptoms that are experienced by patients with IBS also tend to fluctuate over time, making the situation even more complex.
<h2>Alcohol Use Disorders</h2>
<img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-41904" src="https://admin.americanaddictioncenters.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/M_Miller_10_07_16-6906-200x300.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="300" />The term alcoholism no longer has any diagnostic or functional utility. Even though it is often still used, the term refers to a number of varying levels of alcohol abuse. The current diagnostic term for individuals who have a substance use disorder as a result of alcohol use is an alcohol use disorder. This term is applied to the dysfunctional use of alcohol that was formally defined as either alcohol abuse, alcohol dependence, or addiction to alcohol.

An alcohol use disorder is a mental health disorder that occurs when an individual’s use of alcohol results in significant impairment or distress in life, and they meet the diagnostic criteria for a number of specific behavioral symptoms. The older notions of alcohol abuse, alcohol dependence or addiction, and alcoholism actually occur in a continuum as opposed to being separate mutually exclusive categories. The diagnostic category of an alcohol use disorder takes into account this understanding of the presentation of varying levels of alcohol use/abuse.

The lifetime prevalence of alcohol use disorders worldwide is approximately 30 percent. Alcohol abuse costs billions of dollars yearly and takes a toll on society and individuals who suffer from it.

<h2>IBS and Alcohol Use Disorders</h2>
A handful of studies have investigated the relationship between IBS and alcohol abuse or alcohol use disorders. A 1998 research study published in the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse compared 31 patients seeking treatment for alcohol abuse with 40 patients seeking treatment for other medical conditions.3 A total of 13 individuals seeking treatment for alcohol abuse met the criteria for IBS, whereas only one of the other 40 patients seeking treatment for other medical conditions met the criteria for IBS. The researchers concluded that individuals who abuse alcohol may have high rates of IBS. However, the study could not make any type of causal determination, such that having IBS leads people to drink more or that individuals who drink alcohol at significantly higher rates were more likely to suffer from the symptoms of IBS.3

Subsequent community and population-based research studies found little or no relationship between alcohol use and the diagnosis of IBS.1 However, <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23295280/">other research studies</a> noted a relationship between alcohol <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11244249/">consumption and the symptoms of IBS.</a>4 A 2013 study in the American Journal of Gastroenterology looked at drinking patterns and their effects in women diagnosed with IBS and a control group.5 The researchers found that the strongest associations between IBS symptoms in IBS patients and alcohol occurred after binge drinking events and on day following these events. The strongest associations occurred with diarrhea, stomach pain, indigestion, and nausea following binge drinking events. Moderate to light drinking produced no exacerbation of IBS symptoms in the IBS group or in the control group. The researchers concluded that the pattern of drinking individuals displayed could play a role in the inconsistent findings in the research on alcohol use and the symptoms of IBS.

Most recently, a large study reported in the journal Medicine that took place in China and looked at over 57,000 participants determined that having an alcohol use disorder increased the risk of also having IBS.6 The research does not support the notion that individuals who have IBS are more likely to develop alcohol abuse issues or have an alcohol use disorder, but that having an alcohol use disorder may be a risk factor for developing IBS.7 These findings make sense because it is known that moderate to heavy alcohol use can result in numerous gastrointestinal disorders or conditions. Frequent and heavy alcohol use is also associated with discomforting gastrointestinal side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Individuals who already have these issues would be more likely to shy away from drinking alcohol to deal with issues related to stress and depression due to the gastrointestinal complications.

Thus, the general conclusion made by the researchers in these studies is that individuals with alcohol use disorders or who drink alcohol heavily are more likely to experience symptoms related to IBS. Individuals who already have IBS typically do not begin drinking alcohol at moderate to heavy levels.
<h2>Treatment for IBS and Alcoholism</h2>
There is no formal cure for IBS. The treatment often consists of symptom management techniques that may include:7
<ul>
 	<li>Limiting alcohol intake or avoiding alcohol.</li>
 	<li>Limiting caffeine intake.</li>
 	<li>Avoiding junk food, including carbonated beverages.</li>
 	<li><a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/withdrawal-timelines-treatments/anti-depressants">Antidepressant medications</a>, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, to reduce abdominal pain and diarrhea.</li>
 	<li>Increasing fiber intake.</li>
 	<li>Eating moderate meals at regular intervals.</li>
 	<li>Taking laxatives for constipation.</li>
 	<li>Eating specific foods and taking probiotics and certain medicines to deal with symptoms.</li>
 	<li>Using behavioral methods to identify which foods exacerbate IBS symptoms.</li>
 	<li>Engaging in stress management techniques, including <a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/therapy-treatment">psychotherapy</a>.</li>
</ul>
Treatment for alcohol use disorder would begin with a physician-assisted withdrawal management program to help an individual negotiate any withdrawal symptoms they may experience when they stop drinking alcohol.

Most often, physicians prescribe benzodiazepines on a tapering schedule and then prescribe other medications as needed.

Following the withdrawal management program, individuals are strongly encouraged to become involved in a formal alcohol use disorder treatment program that includes therapy (typically, <a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/therapy-treatment/cognitive-behavioral-therapy">Cognitive Behavioral Therapy</a>), support group attendance (e.g., particularly groups like Alcoholics Anonymous), other forms of therapy as needed (e.g., family therapy), and other forms of treatment for any co-occurring conditions, such as IBS, depression, anxiety disorders, etc. Individuals find that their success in substance use disorder treatment is related to the length of time they remain involved in treatment. The longer individuals remain active in formal treatment, the better chances they have at being successful in recovery.

Individuals who begin to express the symptoms of IBS and already have issues with alcohol abuse should address both of these issues together.

A reduction of alcohol intake would help to address the symptoms of IBS, and addressing stress-related symptoms that are associated with IBS would help to curb the desire to use alcohol.

Attempting to address IBS without addressing a co-occurring alcohol abuse issue or a formal alcohol use disorder would not be a successful approach and most likely would not significantly address one’s gastrointestinal issues.
<h2>Can Alcohol Cause or Worsen IBS?</h2>
Research suggests that alcohol can worsen an already-existing diagnosis of IBS or bring about symptoms of IBS after a period of drinking.3,4,5,6 Whether alcohol can cause IBS to develop in a person who formally did not have an IBS diagnosis is still up for debate, and various studies need to be conducted to determine whether alcohol use can, indeed, cause IBS.3,4
<h2>Tips for Drinking With IBS</h2>
Here are some tips to keep in mind if you believe that you may wish to drink and have an IBS diagnosis:
<ul>
 	<li>Take it slow and make sure to watch whether drinking increases the severity or frequency of your IBS symptoms.</li>
 	<li>Make sure to hydrate properly when you’re drinking alcohol and follow the CDC’s guidelines for alcohol use in the United States.</li>
 	<li>If your doctor tells you to not drink alcohol in relation to your IBS diagnosis (or any other reason), then be sure to follow your physician’s recommendations for your health and wellbeing.</li>
 	<li>Consider limiting or completely eliminating your alcohol consumption.</li>
</ul>

<h2>About Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)</h2>
A doctor named Albert Ellis developed REBT in 1957. This therapy was inspired by stoic philosophy and many scholars believe that from REBT spawned <a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/therapy-treatment/cognitive-behavioral-therapy">cognitive behavioral therapy</a> (CBT). REBT shares some similarities with CBT, but these two therapies are not the same.1

One of the primary differences between REBT and CBT is that REBT places a strong emphasis on beliefs (including irrational beliefs) and how these influence peoples’ thoughts, feelings, actions, and reactions, whereas CBT focuses on challenging cognitive distortions to mitigate maladaptive behaviors.1 It also focuses on secondary beliefs, including anti-awfulizing, high frustration tolerance, and self or radical acceptance.

As with other types of CBT, a cornerstone of REBT is the philosophy that beliefs surrounding an event influence your emotions or feelings, which, in turn, drives the way someone reacts and behaves.1

<h2>The ABC Model of REBT</h2>
The ABC framework is the core of REBT model and it helps therapists assess and reframe irrational beliefs in clients. Reactions addressed in the ABC model might be either healthy or unhealthy.2

The key concepts of the ABC model in REBT include:1,2

A- Activating event: Adversity or an event is represented by the letter A. According to the ABC model, the activating event is not what causes someone to feel or react a certain way. Instead, someone’s beliefs and inner dialogue cause them to feel, act, and react in either a healthy or unhealthy manner.

B- Beliefs: REBT focuses on reframing irrational beliefs. The letter B represents one’s beliefs around the situation (or A, the activating event). In this model, it’s assumed that someone prescribes meaning to events (A) through their belief systems and inner dialogue.

C- Consequence: The term "consequence" is used to explain a person’s emotional or behavioral reaction to (A) the activating event. Cs might include emotional responses, such as sadness, anxiety, or anger. Or, Cs might include behaviors such as doing something repeatedly or acting angrily.[/callout]
<h2>REBT and Substance Use Treatment</h2>
Behavioral therapies are the most commonly used substance use treatment modality.3 Behavioral therapy can be delivered in individual, group, or family therapy settings and help the client to build healthy coping mechanisms, recognize maladaptive thinking and triggers, and maintain sobriety.3

Therapists and treatment providers sometimes use REBT to help a variety of mental health conditions, including addiction.4 There are few empirical research studies that specifically address the efficacy of REBT within SUD treatment.5 However, studies have found that participants introduced to one form of REBT, known as rational emotive health therapy (REHT), during <a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/alcoholism-treatment">alcohol use disorder</a> (AUD) treatment exhibited significant reduction in their alcohol use frequency.

These results were consistent with previous studies, which demonstrate that exposure to the REBT model of treatment resulted in a reduction of psychological and behavioral disruptions.4

REHT was developed to cater to the needs of people affected by alcohol and addiction.4 REHT was found to help people decrease their thoughts and feelings surrounding alcohol use.4 Within the study, there was evidence that REHT helped participants reduce their alcohol use.4

<h2>Other Models of REBT</h2>
Returning to the traditional ABC model, psychologists determined that additional components should be added to the ABC framework in an attempt to explain the complexities that may occur with patients.2 Expanding on the ABCs, common inclusions are:2

<h2>What Is REBT Used to Treat?</h2>
The focus of REBT on irrational beliefs has been used in substance use treatment.4 In treatment of AUD, the focus of irrational beliefs around one’s drinking behavior are evaluated using REBT.6 More studies on the efficacy of REBT in substance abuse treatment are needed to determine the effectiveness of this therapy model on AUD, <a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/rehab-guide/substance-use-disorder">substance use disorders</a> (SUDs), and other mental health conditions.

<h2>REBT Examples</h2>
The backbone of REBT is the ABC model.1 REBT therapists will likely use iterations of the ABC model to help treat irrational thoughts and beliefs in clients, while making individualized adjustments when fit.2 Below is a substance use-focused example of the ABC model:

A- Activating event: You are working on your sobriety but walk past your familiar bar on the way home from work. You can hear your old friends chatting, and the smell of the bar lingers slowly out of the cracked door on your way by.

B- Beliefs: Irrational beliefs might be, “I’ll never maintain my sobriety,” “I’ll never not have a drink again,” or “I’m such a failure for wanting a drink.”

C- Consequence: Walking past the bar may be a triggering event for irrational thoughts, leading you to emotional behavior. Such behaviors might include going into the bar to have a drink or getting angry and yelling at your partner.

The above example is a common substance-use focused ABC. Continuing with the expanded model of ABC are the following:

D- Dispute: You determine your irrational belief is “I’m a failure,” and you’re able to separate your feelings of failure from your choice to maintain your abstinence. You can dispute the irrational belief of “I’m a failure” by looking at the supporting facts: you have not broken your abstinence, recovery is a lifetime process, and it’s normal to grieve.

E- Effects: Recognizing that your irrational belief might drive a negative behavior, you instead call your sponsor and continue on your way home. Who knows, maybe you’ll even have time to catch that 6 o’clock meeting.

F- New Feeling: You feel proud of yourself and how you handled the situation. Now when walking by the bar, you feel empowered to continue along your way.

<h2>What Happens During a DUI Test or Checkpoint?</h2>
DUI checkpoints are pre-identified locations determined by law enforcement in which every driver is given a sobriety test or every driver at a certain interval (every 4th car) is given a sobriety test.1

DUI checkpoints have existed for many years, but they continue to be controversial among United States citizens. In fact, some states deem DUI checkpoints are illegal due to violating constitutional rights.1

Whether law enforcement stops you at a DUI checkpoint or pulls you over for suspicion of impaired driving, they will most likely ask you to take a field sobriety test. It is important to understand that while you may refuse to take this test and its smaller assessment, doing so could be used against you in a court of law.


<h2>Field Sobriety Test</h2>
A standard field sobriety test is generally a series of 3 smaller assessments proven to be effective in measuring intoxication. These three steps are administered by a law enforcement officer and include:2
<ul>
 	<li>Horizontal gaze nystagmus (HGN).</li>
 	<li>Walk and turn (WAT).</li>
 	<li>One-leg stand (OLS).</li>
</ul>
In a horizontal gaze nystagmus (HGN) assessment, a law enforcement officer is looking for involuntary jerking of the eyes as you look side to side (which is indicative of being under the influence of certain drugs or alcohol).2 In WAT and OLS assessments, law enforcement agents challenge your capability to divide your attention between a physical and mental task. A study conducted by the Southern California Research Institute found that the HGN alone was 77% accurate in determining intoxication, the OLS on its own was 65% accurate, and the WAT on its own was 68% accurate.2

If you refuse a field sobriety test, an officer can still arrest you if they suspect you may be impaired. A standard breathalyzer test can also be used to determine your intoxication level. Each state has its own laws regarding breathalyzers and the consequences if you refuse to comply with one. In Michigan, for example, if you refuse a breathalyzer, your license will automatically be suspended for a year and you will have 6 points added to your driving record.3 Be sure to check with your state to find out the laws that apply to you.

<h2>What Happens After a DUI Test</h2>
When you take a DUI test, you will either pass or fail. If you fail, law enforcement officers may arrest you. After an arrest, you may need to go through the judicial courts to resolve your charges.

Drug court is a specialized part of the court system that is designed for people who have nonviolent drug and alcohol charges. This can include misdemeanor and felony charges. There are 3 primary reasons for drug court being its own specialized sector of the criminal justice system. The 3 reasons are:4
<ul>
 	<li>Judges, public defenders, and state attorneys become more proficient in drug crimes, which makes processing paperwork and court proceedings more efficient.</li>
 	<li>Drug offenses are the court's priority and are not susceptible to being pushed aside for other more violent cases.</li>
 	<li>Drug cases can be developed through street-level enforcement efforts that help produce strong evidence and witnesses, which leads to more equality and fairness in sentencing and saves valuable time.</li>
</ul>

<h2>What is Court-Ordered Treatment for DUIs/DWIs?</h2>
Court-ordered DUI treatment is a form of substance abuse treatment that is ordered by the court system as an alternative to traditional sentencing. This form of treatment offers chemically dependent offenders a chance to target their underlying illness and dysfunction while under simultaneous judicial supervision. This model of treatment, when compared to incarceration or probation, is thought to benefit the offender and the overall health and safety of the public.5

Court-ordered substance abuse treatment may exist in the form of inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient rehabilitation, drug court programs, individual therapy and drug counseling, or a mixture of these options. Court-ordered treatment for DUIs and DWIs may also address other behavioral issues that drive criminal behavior through services such as anger management counseling. While some DUI rehab centers are <a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/rehab-guide/state-funded" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">state-funded</a>, others accept private insurance and other forms of payment. <h3>Is DUI Rehab or Alcohol Treatment Necessary?</h3>
Whether or not DUI rehab or alcohol treatment is necessary depends upon your particular situation, goals, and preferences. Choosing to participate in alcohol abuse treatment under legal pressure may be a wise choice if you are facing jail time for drug or alcohol related charges, have children, and more.


<h2>What Happens After DUI/DWI Treatment?</h2>
Substance abuse treatment has been proven to be highly effective, especially in programs that are 90 days or longer.8 (However, any amount of treatment for a substance abuse issue is worthwhile.) After completing inpatient treatment at a DUI <a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/alcoholism-treatment" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">alcohol rehab</a>, you may be expected to follow certain protocols and they can vary depending on your specific charge(s) and the state you live in.

DUI offenders in Pennsylvania, for example, are required to have a device installed on their car that prevents operation if alcohol is detected on the driver's breath for an indefinite amount of time.9 After DUI treatment, additional recommendations by the court or your treatment center may include attending AA/NA meetings, individual therapy, and continual medication monitoring.
<h2>How Much Does Getting a DUI Cost?</h2>
The costs associated with a DUI, which can be catastrophic, vary from state to state. These costs include legal fees, court fines, cost of treatment, and jail costs (depending on the state you live in). There may also be secondary costs associated with a DUI, such as an increase in your auto insurance rates.

<h2>Can I Go to DUI Rehab Instead of Jail?</h2>
In some cases, you might be given an opportunity to attend alcohol rehabilitation treatment instead of serving a jail sentence. Many variables can determine eligibility, including criminal history, the specific charges, age, and the state you live in.

The following variables might make court-appointed rehab more likely than jail:11

These are generalizations, and you may be able to attend alcohol treatment even if you don’t meet any of the above-mentioned characteristics.



<h2>How Can DUIs Affect Employment?</h2>
Your employment status may be impacted by getting a DUI. Many employers run background checks before hiring candidates. Unfortunately, the record of your DUI may impede your ability to attain certain new job positions. If you receive a DUI while employed, you may be required to take time off from work to deal with your court proceedings, attend treatment, and follow legal requirements.

Your employment may be impacted after a DUI in other ways as well. If getting a DUI automatically strips you of previously held certifications or licenses, the DUI may impact your ability to legally perform your job and, thus, your employment. If driving is part of your job and your driver’s license is suspended or revoked, your ability to perform the job will likely be directly impacted.

However, there are also various protective measures in place for current employees who get DUIs or need treatment for an alcohol use disorder. The American Disability Act (ADA) protects employees against workplace discrimination for needing substance abuse treatment.12 However, the relevance of and ability to employ the ADA depends on various factors, such as whether the employee is suffering from an addiction to drugs or alcohol. <h2>What Are Medications for Addiction Treatment?</h2>
As would be expected given the name, medications are an indispensable element of <a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/addiction-medications">MAT</a> methods—but they aren’t the only component of such treatment. Instead, MAT entails a combined approach to treat substance use disorders. MAT combines pharmacological treatment (medications) with behavioral treatment that is tailored to a patient’s unique needs. Many people have been helped in recovery through this whole-patient-focused approach.1 In its various forms, MAT may effectively minimize cravings, block some of the rewarding properties of certain substances, and ultimately decrease drinking and continued substance use behavior. The goal of MAT is full recovery; however, MAT has also been shown to:1

 	<li>Decrease criminal activity related to opioid use and other drug use.</li>

MAT is a comprehensive approach to treatment; in its various phases, it incorporates strategies to address several components of your life, including vocational issues, medical and mental health concerns, family issues, and legal concerns through monitoring, support, screening, referrals, and counseling.2

MAT was originally designed to treat opioid use disorder (OUD) in the 1960s when methadone maintenance was developed as one of the key forms of treatment for this problem. Federally-funded treatment programs emerged in the 1970s; the term “maintenance treatment” (referring to medication-assisted treatment) was first used in the Narcotic Addict Treatment Act of 1974.

In the 1990s, the National Institutes of Health published important recommendations clarifying that opioid addiction was not due to a lack of willpower or a moral failing, but a treatable disorder. This helped further promote the concept of addiction as a medical condition, widened the search for and adoption of MAT options, and may have also helped to reduce some of the stigmas associated with MAT. Soon, other treatments and medications developed, and MAT became more widely used. Finally, accreditation systems for opioid treatment programs (OTPs) helped standardize treatment methods in MAT and ensure high-quality MAT services across the United States.2

<h2>What are the Components of MAT?</h2>
MAT combines FDA-approved medications with various behavioral therapies for addiction treatment. This combination has proven effective for the comprehensive treatment of certain substance use disorders. It allows for the simultaneous pharmacological management of some of the physical symptoms associated with substance use (or substance withdrawal), as well as behavioral therapeutic interventions for related psychological, mental, and emotional issues.1

Before entering a MAT program, individuals undergo a thorough assessment by a physician, which helps the physician determine the appropriate course and level of MAT, including the best medications for an individual's particular needs.3

Patients often start with a period of medical detox to help them become stable as they withdraw from the substance.4 They may then progress through a more rehabilitative phase of a treatment program that strives to empower them to better cope with major life issues. All the while, a combination of medication and therapy will continue to be utilized. At the completion of the more rehabilitative and supportive phases of MAT, a patient will transition to medical maintenance treatment that mainly involves medication to help manage their SUD in the longer term.2,6

MAT drugs that you may receive vary depending on the type of substance use disorder being treated. In cases of opioid use disorder management, treatment medications may, at some point, be gradually tapered off (though long-term maintenance may last for several years, if not indefinitely).2 MAT can be used to treat alcohol use disorder and opioid use disorder.
<h3>Medications Used to Help You Stop Drinking Alcohol</h3>
To treat alcohol use disorder (AUD), individuals may receive: 1,3,4

<h3>Medications Used to Help You Stop Misusing Opioids</h3>
To treat opioid use disorder (OUD), individuals may receive: 1,3,4

 	<li>Buprenorphine. This partial opioid agonist has a very high affinity for opioid receptors. It can reduce cravings and minimize some of the uncomfortable symptoms of opioid withdrawal.</li>
 	<li>Methadone. A longer-acting, full opioid agonist, methadone reduces withdrawal symptoms and cravings and through the development of cross-tolerance, may diminish the euphoric high of other opioids, should they be used during methadone treatment.</li>
 	<li>Naltrexone. This opioid receptor antagonist blocks the euphoric and sedating effects of opioids. When utilized for OUD treatment, it may help to suppress opioid cravings and discourage continued opioid misuse.[/callout]</li>

According to the 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health and the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services:5,6

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), MAT has been proven to be effective in clinical studies and has been shown to significantly decrease the need for inpatient detox. By reducing the risk of relapse, MAT for opioid use disorder may also lower the risk of contracting HIV or hepatitis C.1
<h2>Confidentiality of MAT and Treatment</h2>

<h2>Misconceptions About MAT</h2>
People may have the misconception that MAT means substituting one drug for another. This is not the case; MAT drugs are evidence-based, FDA-approved medications that can normalize physiological functioning, restore balance to previously-disrupted brain chemistry, and block the reward associated with continued substance misuse for those in recovery.1

You also might worry that you’re not sober if you use MAT medications. However, FDA-approved medications used under the discretion of a prescribing physician support recovery and sobriety. These medications are not designed to get you high or contribute to continued, compulsive misuse or addiction. Instead, they are intended to help you sustain recovery progress as you work toward long-term sobriety.1

Some people may have concerns about the potential for misuse of MAT medications themselves. However, while opioid agonist treatment medications may have some misuse liability risk, the reinforcing properties are limited when used in adherence with a prescribed treatment schedule. Additionally, medications such as Suboxone (buprenorphine and naloxone) are formulated to deter certain types of misuse because doing so would result in blocking some of the rewarding or pleasurable effects of the drug. That means if you misuse them, you won’t experience euphoria or get high, but will instead be at risk of experience unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.8

Yet another common misconception about MAT is that there’s no proof that MAT is better than abstinence. However, MAT is evidence-based and recommended as the first line of treatment by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, SAMHSA, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other organizations.9
<h2>Does Insurance Cover MAT Treatments?</h2>
Most health insurance plans cover at least a portion of MAT treatment, if not the entirety of MAT treatment. Alcohol intoxication is a result of short-term effects on the central nervous system with symptoms that can vary drastically depending on how often someone drinks, the amount of alcohol they consume, their unique bodily makeup, and their weight. Symptoms of alcohol intoxication, such as mild cognitive and physical impairment, may become evident after just 1 or 2 drinks, but heavier use can result in alcohol overdose if someone ingests too much alcohol during one sitting.7

The immediate effects of alcohol on the brain are due to its influence on the organ’s communication and information-processing pathways. Unfortunately, drinking too heavily or too rapidly can result in several adverse mental effects, such as confusion, impaired motor coordination, and declined decision-making ability. Continuing drinking despite recognizing signs of this can lead to alcohol overdose, sometimes referred to as “alcohol poisoning.”8

Alcohol can inflict lasting harm on your brain and result in shrinkage of the organ's region known as the hippocampus. In one study by the University of Oxford, researchers followed participants for 30 years, tracking their drinking patterns and brain health. Participants in the study who drank 4 or more drinks a day had almost 6 times the risk of hippocampus shrinkage compared to nondrinkers.9 In other words, brain shrinkage was proportional to the amount of alcohol the participants consumed, and even mild and moderate drinkers showed more shrinkage of the hippocampus than those who abstained from alcohol completely.9 [/callout-borders]
<h3>Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome (aka Wet Brain)</h3>
Those who use alcohol excessively and for long periods of time also risk thiamine deficiency as a result of poor nutrition, which may result in the development of <a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/alcoholism-treatment/wet-brain" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome</a> (WKS), sometimes referred to as “wet brain.” This condition can cause persisting mental confusion, eye movement disturbances, difficulty with coordination, and persistent learning and memory problems.7
<h2>Development of an Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD)</h2>
Long-term alcohol misuse can also lead to the development of an alcohol use disorder (AUD), which may sometimes be referred to as an “alcohol addiction” or “alcoholism.”An AUD is a compulsive, problematic pattern of alcohol use that persists despite negative consequences to a person’s health, job, and personal relationships. For a mental health professional to diagnose someone with an AUD, a person must meet at least two of the following criteria within a 12-month span:10

<h2>What is Heroin Withdrawal?</h2>
Heroin and other opioids are highly addictive substances that can lead to physiologic changes in the brain and alterations in behavior.5 Heroin binds to the body’s opioid receptors in the brain and central nervous system, activating certain cells (neurons) because their chemical structure mimics the body’s natural opioids (e.g., endorphins).6 However, heroin activates opioid receptors in a different way than an endogenous, or naturally occurring, opioids, leading to abnormal signals being sent to the brain and the brain stem, which controls basic function such as heart rate, breathing, and sleeping.

The brain begins to adapt with regular heroin use, leading to tolerance (where a person needs to take higher doses of heroin to feel the same effects) and physiological dependence. Dependence is characterized by withdrawal symptoms which occur when someone attempts to cut back on their heroin use or stop using it entirely. Withdrawal symptoms are not typically life-threatening but very unpleasant and even painful, making it difficult for many people to quit using heroin.5 Withdrawal is a phenomenon characterized by a set of symptoms that happen when someone stops using a substance that their body has become dependent on, such as heroin.7

The withdrawal symptoms across all opioids are comparable, though there can be wide variations in the time of onset, the severity of symptoms, and how long withdrawal symptoms take to subside. These factors generally depend on the specific opioid(s) someone used, as well as how much they used (the dosage), how long they used it, other substances they use, and the time between doses.5

Although heroin withdrawal symptoms alone are not usually dangerous, the gastrointestinal symptoms produced by heroin withdrawal (such as diarrhea and vomiting) can lead to an electrolyte imbalance, dehydration, and potentially life-threatening symptoms based on the possibility of these effects.5

<h2>Acute (Short-Term) Heroin Withdrawal Symptoms</h2>
Heroin withdrawal can occur within hours of someone’s last dose of heroin. Typically, heroin withdrawal starts around 8 to 24 hours after someone’s last use; however, exactly when acute, short-term heroin withdrawal symptoms appear can vary between individuals.5,8 Acute heroin withdrawal can last anywhere from 3 to 10 days.5,8 The duration of acute heroin withdrawal may vary and depends on factors such as frequency of heroin use, dose of heroin used, and duration of heroin use.8 A person’s individual and genetic factors play a role as well, including current physical and mental health condition, and medications or other substances they use.

Short-term symptoms of heroin withdrawal are very uncomfortable and distressing, leading many to return to heroin use. Short-term signs and symptoms of heroin withdrawal may include:5
<ul>
 	<li>Fast pulse.</li>
 	<li>Increased breathing rate.</li>
 	<li>Increased blood pressure.</li>
 	<li>Elevated body temperature.</li>
 	<li>Sleep disturbances such as insomnia.</li>
 	<li>Dilated pupils.</li>
 	<li>Unusually heightened reflexes.</li>
 	<li>Sweating.</li>
 	<li>Goosebumps (“piloerection”).</li>

<h2>Protracted (Long-Term) Heroin Withdrawal Symptoms</h2>
Long-term heroin withdrawal symptoms, sometimes called “protracted withdrawal.9 occurs when persistent impairments  are felt even after a period acute withdrawal.10

Withdrawal symptoms that may persist after acute withdrawal from heroin and other opioids may include:10

 	<li>Decreased attention, impaired concertation, and difficulty making decisions.</li>

Opioid <a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/drug-detox">detoxification</a> (commonly referred to as simply “detox” or medically supervised withdrawal) can be an initial first step in more comprehensive treatment for <a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/heroin-treatment">heroin addiction</a> or an opioid use disorder.11

Medically supervised withdrawal is a treatment approach where doctors or other clinical staff provide monitoring, medication, and other treatment interventions to help manage and ease the discomfort of withdrawal signs and symptoms.12 Commonly prescribed medications for treating heroin withdrawal are also used to manage opioid use disorder and include methadone or buprenorphine.13 These medications are opioid agonists, which means they bind to the same brain receptors as heroin and work similarly but do so in a way that eliminates or reduces withdrawal symptoms without the high or euphoria of illicit opioid use. Methadone and buprenorphine (e.g., Suboxone) help eliminate or reduce withdrawal symptoms, reduce cravings for heroin and other opioids, and aid in preventing relapse or a return to opioid use.14

After someone has successfully detoxed from heroin and is medically stable, they may benefit from further treatment of an opioid use disorder. Ongoing treatment can help manage the behavioral and psychological aspects of heroin misuse or heroin addiction and may also include a continuation of medications used during detox or prescribed after detox to help manage opioid use disorder. Heroin Withdrawal Symptoms, Timeline & Detox for Heroin

More commonly, Meth is used illicitly in forms such as crystal meth.1,2,3 Methamphetamine was originally synthesized from amphetamine in the early 20th century as a treatment for nasal congestion and trouble breathing.1 With the passage of the Controlled Substances Act in 1970, methamphetamine, as well as other stimulants amphetamine and cocaine were placed on Schedule II as drugs with a high potential for abuse which may lead to severe physiological dependence.

The 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health estimates that 2 million Americans 12 years or older used methamphetamine in the past year, making it the second most commonly used illicit stimulant.3

Meth rehab treatment typically begins with detox, in order to overcome the uncomfortable symptoms associated with withdrawal in a medically supervised environment. Once stabilized, patients usually enter a live-in or inpatient rehab program in order to receive therapy and learn the tools needed to attain long-term recovery.

<h2>Why is Meth so Addictive?</h2>
Meth use, like other amphetamines, results in increased activity, decreased appetite, enhanced sociability and talkativeness, and can induce feelings of pleasure and a sense of well-being. A key difference between meth and amphetamines, however, is that greater amounts of the drug pass into the brain when compared with a similar dose of amphetamines, making it a more potent stimulant.

When the drug is smoked or injected, the effects are felt extremely quickly; causing an immediate and intense, but short-lived, rush.1 Snorting or oral ingestion produces effects of euphoria within several minutes but not an intense rush.

These pleasurable effects last longer than cocaine but are still somewhat fleeting, and users often try to maintain the high by taking more of the drug, sometimes foregoing food, sleep and other responsibilities as they binge on the drug over several days.4

Taking meth causes an increase in levels of dopamine, a brain chemical that plays an important role in motivation and the reinforcement of rewards.1,2

<h2>Long Term Effects of Meth Use</h2>

Using meth can result in dependence and addiction, and can be harmful to your body and mind over time.1,2,5 It creates changes in the brain that can endure for long periods of time—and may be only partially reversible.1,2 Effects of chronic meth use can include:1,2,5

 	<li>Cardiovascular issues such as heart attack, irregular heartbeat, palpitations, and cardiac arrest.</li>
 	<li>Damage to cells in the brain.</li>

To be diagnosed with a stimulant use disorder, you would have to demonstrate at least 2 of the following symptoms within a 1-year period:5

 	<li>Spending a lot of time getting or using meth or crashing after a binge.</li>
 	<li>Taking more meth or using it for longer than planned.</li>
 	<li>Using meth in situations that can be dangerous, such as while driving.</li>
 	<li>Wanting to cut back or stop using but not being able to.</li>
 	<li>Developing a tolerance to the effects of meth, where you need to use more to feel the same effects.</li>
 	<li>Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when you stop using meth.</li>
</ul>
There are some <a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/meth-treatment/signs-symptoms">signs of a meth addiction</a> to be aware of if you are worried that you or someone you care about might have an issue with meth. These can include:5,6

<h2>Anhedonia and Psychosis</h2>
High doses and chronic use of meth are associated with two long-term mental health concerns: anhedonia and psychosis.1,3,5,7

Anhedonia is a diminished interest or pleasure in previously enjoyable or rewarding activities.8 It has been theorized that changes in the pleasure and reward centers of the brain as a result of meth use may play a role in protracted anhedonia in former meth users.7

Meth use can also result in psychotic symptoms and drug-induced psychosis, with studies suggesting that those who use intravenously or have a family history of psychosis are at heightened risk.1,5,9 Although psychiatric symptoms typically resolve themselves within a week of abstinence, for some these symptoms may last long after using and may recur in times of stress.1 Signs of psychosis can include:1,2,5
<ul>
 	<li class="li1">Delusions, (e.g.,  receiving messages through the radio or television and convinced they are real.</li>
 	<li>Hallucinations (i.e., feeling, hearing, or seeing things that aren’t there, such as being convinced that bugs are crawling under your skin).</li>

<h2>Meth Addiction Treatment &amp; Rehab</h2>
Various forms of effective treatment are available to those with an addiction to meth, and the <a href="https://americanaddictioncenters.org/meth-treatment/options" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">best meth treatment options</a> depend on each individual.10 The majority of people who are addicted to meth will go through withdrawal, and detox is from meth is a first step prior to treatment.3,5,10 Stimulant withdrawal is typically less physically dangerous than withdrawal from some other substances, such as alcohol, opioids, and sedatives.3 However, methamphetamine withdrawal can produce seizures in some people. Behavioral therapy is effective in treating meth addiction.1,2 Some behavioral therapy techniques that are commonly used in treatment may include:1,2,10
<ul>
 	<li>Cognitive-behavioral therapy, a treatment to prevent relapse by increasing awareness of high-risk situations, developing coping skills, changing harmful behaviors, and managing cravings.</li>
 	<li>Contingency management interventions/motivational incentives, in which tangible rewards reinforce positive behaviors such as attending treatment sessions and not using. As you stay sober, the rewards may increase in value.</li>
 	<li>The Matrix Model, which incorporates behavioral therapy, individual therapy, family therapy and education, encouragement to participate in 12-step meetings, drug testing, and positive reinforcement of desirable behaviors such as avoiding substance use and attending treatment.12</li>

<h2>Are Medications Used in Meth Treatment?</h2>
There are currently no FDA-approved medications available to treat meth addiction.1,2, 3,10 Meth withdrawal symptoms generally aren’t as medically dangerous or physically uncomfortable as those associated with other drugs, however, so certain medications may be prescribed as needed to manage specific symptoms. For example, Benadryl or trazodone may be used for insomnia in a detoxification or rehabilitation setting, and antidepressants can manage intense depressive symptoms.3 Researchers are currently investigating the use of medications to manage cravings or lower the risk of relapse, with early results from a clinical double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase III clinical trial of a combination of naltrexone and bupropion showing promise for people with methamphetamine use disorder.1,10
